A laboratory test for HIV with a p24 antigen test performed 21 days after a potentially dangerous situation may not be fully reliable. Although IV-generation tests can detect infection earlier, a reliable negative result is recommended at least 12 weeks after exposure due to the so-called serological window period. Therefore, to be sure, I encourage you to repeat the test 3 months after the risky situation.
