Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disease that is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. As recently as the 20th century, it was called intestinal neurosis, because psychological factors play an important role in its course. Ailments are most common in women between 30 and 50 years of age.
