Prolonged use of Onirex can lead to increased tolerance to the drug, and in the long run - to the development of addiction. Quote from the summary of product characteristics: "Repeated intake of medicines such as zolpidem (the active substance in Onirex) over several weeks may lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of treatment." 'The use of zolpidem may lead to abuse of the medicinal product and/or physical or psychological dependence. The risk of developing addiction increases with the dose and duration of treatment." "If physical dependence develops, abrupt discontinuation of treatment will be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms such as headaches or muscle aches, severe anxiety, mental tension, restlessness, confusion and irritability."
