Is it safe to give half a sachet of Monural to a 5-year-old?

The doctor prescribed Monural 3g for a 4-year-old boy. Half a sachet one day and the other half on the second day. Do I understand correctly that the dose of the active substance has thus decreased to 1.5g? Is it safe? What could go wrong? What to look for?

Yes, the daily dose you will give your child according to the dosage recommended by the doctor is 1.5 g. In general, Monural is currently authorised for the treatment of urinary tract infections in women and adolescent girls over 12 years of age. Until 2020, a 2-gram dose of Monural was present on the market, which was recommended for children over 5 years of age. In 2020, the European Medicines Agency decided to withdraw this dose of Monural from the market on the grounds that the health benefits of the medicine were too low in relation to the risks that the medicine might entail. Please remember, however, that the doctor, according to his own knowledge, may recommend a different type of therapy - this is the so-called off-label application: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/artykuly/leczenie-off-label-poza-wskazaniami If you have doubts about the safety of the prescribed therapy, I encourage you to talk to your doctor again. As for the side effects of Monural, the most common are gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhoea, nausea) and headaches and dizziness.
