Can blood sampling performed with a needle and syringe result in poorer quality tests?

Hello, I would like to ask if blood sampling done with a needle and syringe may carry a weaker quality of tests? I know that now a vacuum system is usually used at collection points. At the last blood draw in the hospital, the lady took my blood with a syringe, and I wonder if this somehow affects the quality of the test results. Best regards

Yes, taking a sample with a syringe is not only more problematic, but it also carries the risk of potential pre-laboratory errors (this does not mean, however, that they do not occur during vacuum collection, because they also occur, but they are more difficult to obtain). Drawing blood too vigorously with a plunger or transferring blood incorrectly after collection into tubes (e.g. by injecting through a closed cap) puts samples at risk of haemolysis. Hemolysis can affect min. on the level of potassium, which then falsely increases.

I encourage you to ask a laboratory diagnostician next time, who will certainly give you a detailed answer.

With a question about the quality of blood tests, it is best to turn to the staff of the diagnostic laboratory. However, to the best of my knowledge, vacuum systems provide a more hygienic, safer, faster and more convenient blood collection for staff. The tubes themselves are unsealed only before using it for testing. However, the result depends primarily on the parameters of the blood, and not on the method of its collection, assuming that all the required steps are followed.
