Cascara sagrada is a plant containing anthracocompounds, i.e. substances with a laxative effect, also present, for example, in buckthorn bark and rheum root. These substances irritate the intestines and although they stimulate their peristalsis in this way, facilitate bowel movements, they should not be used chronically. This can result in intestinal inflammation, as well as too intense laxative effect – as a result, electrolyte disturbances may occur. Manufacturers of drugs containing anthracians usually recommend emergency use, no more than 14 days without consulting a doctor.
