St. John's wort extract may weaken the effect of hormonal methods of contraception, which include hormonal contraceptive spirals. For this reason, in the case of using St. John's wort extracts by people using hormonal methods of contraception, it is recommended to use an additional, mechanical method of contraception (eg condom) during and for at least 2 weeks after short-term and 4 weeks after long-term (longer than 4 weeks) use of preparations containing St. John's wort extract.
