The safety of using drugs in a given patient depends on many factors m.in age, state of health, concomitant diseases, other preparations used, type of sleep disorders. We distinguish several groups of drugs used in sleep disorders, including benzodiazepines, benzodiazepine receptor agonists, psychonevoleptic drugs, antihistamines, antidepressants. The use of hypnotics carries the risk of side effects, tolerance or addiction. Some of the preparations are indicated for use in lowering sleep latency, prolonging REM sleep, inhibiting REM sleep, in sleep disorders caused by shift work. Hypnotics also have contraindications to use, e.g. the patient's age, the occurrence of kidney disorders, epileptic seizures or arrhythmias. As you can see, it is impossible to clearly select the safest drug from among the preparations available on prescription. The choice requires a medical history and determination of a specific problem that occurs with sleep, for each patient the safest drug may turn out to be a different preparation. I encourage you to read the materials on sleep, in which selected groups of hypnotic drugs are described: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/artykuly/bezsennosc
