Good morning. I have a Kyleena insert on and it has already passed its 5-year validity period. Does the insert still work? What is the risk of getting pregnant?

The Kyleena system is used to prevent pregnancy (contraception) for up to five years. After this period, the manufacturer no longer guarantees effectiveness and it should be assumed that the insert does not protect against pregnancy as it should. The drug documentation does not contain information on the risk of becoming pregnant after 5 years from the installation of the system, because after this time the patient should replace the IUD. Unfortunately, it is impossible to indicate at what point you may ovulate resulting in pregnancy. To be sure of very high protection against pregnancy, you should simply follow the manufacturer's recommendations and change the system to a new one. If your deadline has passed, it is advisable to use an additional method of contraception, e.g. a condom, until the replacement. I enclose additional information about Kyleena's system: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/95362/kyleena-przyrzad/apteki
