Hello The last doctor prescribed me the drug Apo-Fina to reduce benign prostatic hyperplasia. In the leaflet I read that it can cause breast cancer in men. How high is the threat of such a disease.

The manufacturer does not provide a statistical risk of breast cancer in men. It only includes a clause that: "Cases of breast cancer in men using finasteride (5 mg per day) have been reported in clinical trials and post-marketing. Physicians should instruct patients to immediately report any changes in breast tissue such as nodules, pain, gynecomastia, or mammary gland discharge." The British regulator states on its website that: "As of November 2009, 50 cases of breast cancer had been reported worldwide in men receiving finasteride at a dose of 5 mg and three cases at a dose of 1 mg. Overall, the incidence of breast cancer in men in clinical trials for finasteride 5 mg was not significantly increased: 7.8 per 100,000 patient-years (95% CI 3·7–16·4) in patients exposed to finasteride for more than 1 year compared with 3·8 per 100,000 patient-years (1.2–11·9) in patients not exposed to finasteride. In general, the risk therefore seems small, but since it cannot be completely excluded, these precautions are recommended.
