Should I take potassium iodide in the event of a nuclear disaster if I have Hashimoto's disease?

Good morning, I am 45 years old, I have hashimoto with hypothyroidism. In the last ultrasound examination, a small thyroid nodule was detected in me - less than 5 mm. A control ultrasound in 8 months was prescribed. Should I take potassium iodide in the event of a nuclear disaster? I ask especially in the context of age and nodule. Thank you.

People with thyroid disease should always seek the individual advice of their endocrinologist regarding the appropriateness and safety of taking a high dose of iodine in the event of a radiological emergency. It is best to ask for such an opinion at the next visit. Iodine will be contraindicated in patients with hyperthyroidism, with hypothyroidism - it depends. Everything is discussed in great detail in the following answer: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/opinie-i-pytania/88849/jodek-czy-osoby-chorujace-na-hashimoto-zapalenie-tarczycy-moga-przyjac-jodek-potasu As for age, then from a pharmaceutical point of view (according to the product documentation), potassium iodide is not recommended for people over 40 years of age, since this age group is less likely to benefit from iodine treatment after exposure to radioactive iodine. The point is that the risk of developing thyroid cancer caused by radiation is small in this age group, while the risk of side effects as a result of taking iodine is real. However, administering iodine to people over 40 years of age exposed to high doses of radioactive iodine (e.g. rescuers, medical services, people from the immediate vicinity of the source of contamination) may nevertheless be beneficial. Therefore, for example, in the CDC recommendations, adults over 40 years of age are included as a target group, but with the indication that they should take KI only if the expected exposure levels would be high enough - appropriate messages should be provided by the authorities. Potassium iodide in tablets is available in a pharmacy on prescription, you can book the drug here: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/38951/jodek-potasu-g-l-pharma-tabletki/apteki I also attach a link to the article that may be helpful: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/blog/czy-wypic-plyn-lugola-w-razie-wybuchu-elektrowni-atomowej-plan-na-wypadek-skazeni https://www.gdziepolek.pl/artykuly/choroba-hashimoto-a-problemy-z-tarczyca and to watch our video about iodine:
