Quite often, weight gain is observed during treatment with SSRIs (even in 1 to 10 patients per 100). However, the mechanism leading to weight gain has not yet been precisely defined. There are theories that this is because SSRIs antidepressants can increase hunger, affect metabolism, or that people with depression often suffer from a lack of appetite and when their health improves, as their appetite increases, they gain weight. Hyperprolactinemia (an increase in the level of prolactin in the blood) is a rare side effect of SSRIs that is seen in less than 1 in 1000 patients. It should also be taken into account that possible side effects of drugs can only be predicted statistically - it is impossible to determine in advance whether and in whom they will occur.
