There is no information that potassium iodide badly affects the action of hormonal contraception. It does not seem likely that such an interaction could occur. According to the documentation of potassium iodide products intended for use after a radiological event, the drug should be taken as soon as possible (preferably within 2 hours) after the announcement that radioactive iodine contamination has occurred. However, taking the tablets within 8 hours after exposure to radioactive iodine is still beneficial. Like all medicines, potassium iodide can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Rarely there is a skin rash. There may also be such side effects as: - hypersensitivity reactions such as swelling of the salivary glands, headache, wheezing or coughing, stomach disorders - autoimmune diseases caused by iodine (Graves' disease, Hashimoto's disease), nodular goiter and iodine-induced transient hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism - hyperthyroidism (characterized by weight loss, increased appetite, hot intolerance and increased sweating), thyroiditis, enlargement of the thyroid gland with or without myxedema (thickening of the skin and tissues, especially on the face) - depression, nervousness, impotence, insomnia (after repeated administration) - salivary gland inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders However, it is impossible to determine what is the statistical probability that such effects will occur.
