As of today (August 12, 2022), it is still not known what exactly poisons the river, and thus - it is difficult to clearly predict what the effects of exposure to contaminated water may be. The detection of significant amounts of mercury by the German side has been reported by the media, but they are not confirmed at the moment. On the Polish side, there is still talk of excessive oxidation of the river. If you drank water from the Oder and you have any disturbing symptoms, you should see a doctor. In case of acute, aggravated, life-threatening ailments - it is best not to delay, but to call 112. The dispatcher has the option of referring the emergency medical team to you. Do not take medication or provoke vomiting on your own. In order to avoid exposure, it is necessary to stop consuming water from the river and entering it, catching and eating fish from the Oder. It is best to limit all use of water from the Oder, also for economic purposes. It is advisable to follow the messages of the Sanitary Inspection.
