Is it true that women of childbearing potential should not use Nebilet?
Hello. I have been taking the drug nebilet 5mg for several years. I recently heard from one of the doctors (this is not my attending physician) that this is a drug that should not be taken by women of so-called reproductive age (in this case under 30 years) because m.in. if pregnancy occurs, it is possible to damage the fetus. To quote, "it is a very good drug but not for young women." Is this true?

Nebivolol works in a way that can have a detrimental effect on pregnancy and fetal health. Pharmacologically, nebivolol drugs (beta-blockers) reduce blood flow through the placenta, which can cause "growth retardation, intrauterine fetal death, miscarriage or preterm birth." The fetus and newborn may also experience side effects such as hypoglycaemia and bradycardia. For the above reasons, the drug is not indicated for pregnant women, unless it is supported by a higher necessity. However, I do not find information that the substance has a teratogenic effect (causes birth defects). According to the documentation of the drug Nebilet, the age of less than 30 years is not a contraindication to the use of this preparation. If you do not want to get pregnant, you can use effective contraception, and even if it happened, pregnancy can now be diagnosed quite quickly using pregnancy tests and possibly discontinue the drug or change it to safe during pregnancy. However, if you want to try for a child in the near future, it is worth consulting a cardiologist - perhaps he would recommend changing the drug to a more suitable one for pregnancy right now.
