Good morning. The son struggles with the problem of derealization during which he has panic attacks. The family doctor prescribed him diazepam. Will it be safe for him when he has a low heart rate during sleep 40-45? The son plays sports, i.e. exercises every day. Won't diazepam lower his heart rate more

Low heart rate is not a contraindication to the use of diazepam. Belonging to the so-called benzodiazepines, diazepam can cause a drop in blood pressure, while even leading to an acceleration of the heart. A relatively low heart rate in the described case is most likely the result of sports and is not a symptom of the disease. I would like to point out that especially at the beginning of diazepam use, symptoms such as m.in. drowsiness, weakness, drop in blood pressure may appear. These symptoms usually disappear on their own. I would like to point out that when benzodiazepines are used in therapeutic doses, cardiovascular disorders appear rarely. The information that this group of drugs can cause a slowdown in the heart is true, but it concerns the situation when these drugs are administered in the form of rapid intravenous administration, and not when they are administered orally.
