The symptoms of monkey pox are somewhat reminiscent of a cold (malaise, fever, fatigue, headaches, muscles and joint pains). A characteristic feature of monkey pox is lymphadenopathy and vesicular rash. It is distinguished by the fact that it often also appears on the inner surface of the hand and on the soles of the feet. Mortality as a result of contracting the West African variety is at the level of 1%. However, the recently diagnosed cases in Europe are mild to moderate and no deaths have been reported so far. It is believed that monkey pox is definitely less contagious than COVID-19, close contact is required to transmit the infection from man to person. In addition, both vaccines and drugs that show effectiveness against the monkey pox virus are already being developed. Therefore, the prevailing opinion is that we are not threatened by an epidemic on such a scale as with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. What is worrying, however, is the unusual way in which the smallpox monkey virus has begun to spread beyond African countries. For this reason, the institutions responsible for the sanitary and epidemiological state are on standby, and the situation is monitored.
