Unfortunately, there are no "miraculous" pills for this ailment. Elephantiasis of the legs is the most severe form of lymphedema, i.e. a condition in which there is a significant swelling of parts of the body due to excessive accumulation of fluids in soft tissues. Treatment of lymphedema depends on the cause of its occurrence. In general, however, it can be said that some methods of treatment are offered to all patients with elephantiasis: 1) Imphatic drainage - a type of compression massage that improves lymph circulation by "pushing" it towards the lymph nodes. The treatment should be performed by a qualified masseur. Initially, stroking movements are performed, at the end squeezing – along the lymphatic vessels or towards the nearest lymph nodes. Drainage allows the inflow of well-oxygenated arterial blood to the vessels, which improves the work of the immune system and supports the removal of toxins from the body. 2) Compression therapy, i.e. the use of compression products, which – like drainage – improve the flow of lymph. We are talking about properly selected socks, stockings or compression tights, the wearing of which promotes narrowing of the lumen of venous vessels and more effective work of valves. Compression reduces swelling and better oxygenation and nourishment of tissues. This, in turn, translates into a lower risk of developing an infection, which in patients struggling with elephantiasis of the legs spreads very quickly. Both of these methods stimulate the flow of lymph and may ultimately lead to a reduction in the size of lymphedema.
