It is not clear how antidepressants taken for many years will affect the body. The cumulative effects of antidepressants on the integrity of brain and peripheral processes can reduce our intellectual performance . Current research is not able to exclude such a possibility. However, on the other hand, depression and chronic stress can also do this. Long-term intake of antidepressants can contribute to breast cancer, however, SSRIs (e.g. Setaloft) help in the fight against colorectal cancer. A study published in the journal Neurology found that patients taking SSRIs had a 50% higher chance of experiencing intracranial hemorrhage and a 40% higher risk of intracranial hemorrhage. However, it is worth mentioning that these are rare strokes – 85% of strokes are ischemic strokes. The use of antidepressants is also associated with an increased risk of bone fall and fractures in old age. It may also be related to the effect of antidepressants on attention, since avoiding falls requires vigilance in old age. The risk of bone fracture after a fall is likely increased because SSRIs result in lower bone mineral density. Taking SSRIs can increase the thickness of the arteries, thereby increasing the risk of arterial disease. Theoretically, women who take antidepressants are twice as likely to develop sudden cardiac death and coronary artery disease, although there are also medical publications that exclude this possibility. In addition to the above-mentioned symptoms that cause antidepressants, it is also hypothesized that these drugs can lead to cognitive disorders, contribute to parkinsonism, but at the same time can help with Alzheimer's disease. There are many medications and many side effects that not everyone has to experience. It is therefore necessary to consider the equally dangerous symptoms of the disease itself and the effects it can cause, including the possibility of suicide of a sick person.
