Is the drug Nifuroxazide a standard antibiotic that works like AUGUMENTIN (the point is whether it wreaks such havoc on the body). THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED THIS DRUG TO MY CHILD (5 YEARS OLD) who has never taken an antibiotic, I am afraid whether to give it to my son. Please help.

Nifuroxazide is not a standard antibiotic. The drug belongs to the group of chemotherapeutic agents, which also includes antibiotics, e.g. Augmentin, but the drug does not work like standard antibiotics. Nifuroxazide has a local effect. It is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and acts only in its light, thanks to which it has found application in the treatment of bacterial diarrhea - it prevents the reproduction of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines. Unlike standard antibiotics, it does not affect the natural bacterial flora found in the digestive tract. Hence, in my opinion - there is no reason for both. If the child suffers from severe diarrhea, the drug should be administered.
