Blue tongue - what can be the causes?

Adverse reactions of Madopar include discolouration of the tongue, oral mucosa, teeth or saliva. Theoretically, it cannot be ruled out that the cause of the change in the coloration of the tongue is the drug being taken. Among the drugs that can cause blue coloration, m.in haloperidol, metoclopramide, minocycline, prochlorperazine and risperidone are mentioned. In the literature, however, you can find descriptions of cases in which the cause of the bluish coloration of the tongue was the consumption of foods containing dyes. In this type of cases, the unusual coloration of the tongue disappeared within a few to several hours. First of all, it is worth analyzing the foods consumed recently. It is possible that the cause is the dyes contained in food. An argument that can support this hypothesis is that the most intense coloration is observed in the middle of the tongue, while the edges retain their natural color. However, this is only a hypothesis. If the unusual coloration of the tongue does not disappear within a dozen or so hours, you should contact your doctor to exclude other causes of this phenomenon, m.in cardiovascular diseases.
