Good morning. The pulmonologist diagnosed me with bronchial asthma today and prescribed Salmex inhaled. From what I've read, it's a compound drug that contains a steroid. Do steroids taken by inhalation also cause weight gain like steroids taken orally or intravenously? I do not hide that I am very afraid of it, although in the leaflet it is mentioned as an action that occurs rarely (1/1000 of cases?). Thank you in advance for your reply.

The risk of systemic side effects of Salmex occurs when taking high doses of this preparation for a long period. As you read in the leaflet, effects on body weight are rare side effects - affecting less than 1 in 1000 people. So more than 999 people out of 1,000 will not experience such a side effect. Inhaled steroids have a good safety profile and, above all, a local effect - they are administered directly into the respiratory tract. I understand that you are afraid of possible side effects, but failure to treat asthma can have many times worse consequences. In addition, in very severe exacerbations of the disease, oral steroids are introduced, at which the risk of exerting effects on the whole body is many times greater than with the drug Salmex.
