Is melanoma a hereditary disease?

Hello. Ten years ago, I had a known melanoma of the skin. My sons (two) suffer from AD. The doctor prescribed them m.in Protopic ointment. Should I use it? I read at the leaflet about the possibility of skin cancers. Do my sons have a genetic burden, or will the use of this ointment be safe for them?

Since Protopic was placed on the market, very few people taking Protopic have developed cancers, including skin cancers. Based on the available data, an association with Protopic ointment treatment has not yet been confirmed or excluded. The occurrence of melanoma in the family is not a contraindication to the use of Protopic ointment. If your doctor has prescribed the use of this medicine, please follow these recommendations. To answer the question of whether your sons are genetically burdened, you would need to have the results of genetic tests for the carrier of MUTATIONS of the CDKN2A and MC1R genes. Most often, to determine the genetic burden associated with the development of melanoma, a mutation test of cdKN2A genes is performed. For example, the risk of transmission of the CDKN2A gene mutation by parents who are carriers of cdKN2A is 50%. In people with this mutation, the risk of developing melanoma is 30%, but if there is a family history of melanoma, the risk of developing this mutation is 60%. For detailed information, please visit the nearest genetic clinic. I encourage you to read the text: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/kategorie/leki-na-atopowe-zapalenie-skory-azs
