Hello. I have a known trigeminal nerve nauralgia. I took gabapentin Teva. As soon as it turned out that I was pregnant, I stopped the drug. Unfortunately, in 10 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus died and miscarriage occurred. Another pregnancy also miscarried in 8 weeks of pregnancy. Is it possible that the drug contributed to miscarriages?

It is very difficult to answer this question unequivocally, but based on the small number of available data, it seems that a relationship cannot be excluded, in particular, if a miscarriage while taking the drug happened twice. However, the cause may lie elsewhere, so a more thorough diagnosis on the part of the gynecologist would be advisable. According to the documentation of drugs with gabapentin: "There are no sufficient data on the use of gabapentin in pregnant women. (...) Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity. (...) The potential danger to humans is unknown. Gabapentin should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefit to the mother clearly outweighs the potential risk to the foetus.' These teratogenicity studies in animals (with drug amounts equivalent to 0.3 to 8 times the daily human dose) showed an increased incidence of miscarriages after implantation. Studies on rabbits, however, are difficult to transfer directly to humans, but the conclusion is that "safety margins are insufficient to exclude the risk of such effects in humans." I enclose additional information - reporting possible side effects is very important to deepen knowledge about the effects of drugs: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/artykuly/jak-i-dlaczego-zglaszac-dzialania-niepozadane
