Jeśli chodzi o testy wykonywane w laboratoriach są one bardzo precyzyjne, przez co uzyskanie fałszywie dodatniego wyniku testu (wynik dodatni u osoby zdrowej) możliwe jest w praktyce jedynie za sprawą błędów laboratoryjnych, które mogą dotyczyć błędów w dokumentacji, testowania niewłaściwej próbki, zanieczyszczenie próbki materiałem pobranej od innej osoby z wynikiem pozytywnym lub problemy z używanymi odczynnikami.

Co istotne, dodatni wynik testu PCR na można uzyskać nawet do 3 miesięcy od zachorowania na COVID-19. Dodatni wynik testu PCR u ozdrowieńców nie zawsze świadczy o aktywnej infekcji. W takiej sytuacji można wykonać test antygenowy, który potwierdzi lub wykluczy, że pacjent ma aktywną infekcję.
