Glicerol jest tłustą, gęstą, bezbarwną cieczą. Jego obecność w syropach na kaszel suchy powoduje, że błona śluzowa dróg oddechowych, w szczególności gardła, powleka się filmem ochronnym, który ochrania ją przed działaniem drażniących czynników zewnętrznych mogących wywoływać odruch kaszlu.
Popicie syropu z glicerolem spowoduje, że powłoka zostanie spłukana z gardła i przyjmowanie leku nie będzie miało sensu.
