Can abdominal pain after inserting an intrauterine device be a cause for concern?

Hello. 3 days ago I put on a plain copper insert. My stomach hurts terribly. The doctor checked in the ultrasound and everything is ok. Prescribed antibiotic and diastolic. I do not know if it is from nerves or from analgesics but the day after the insert my whole stomach hurts the most in the navel area. So much so that I want to vomit. The symptoms are strange because it only hurts when I walk. As I lie down, everything is ok. I will add that I had a gastroscopy recently and it is ok.

If the pain is severe, you should first consult a gynecologist who will check if there has been a displacement of the IUD. Since in your case the doctor found the correct location of the IUD, there is no reason to worry. Abdominal pain during the first weeks of wearing the IUD may occur. Then it is worth reaching for an analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug available without a prescription. I attach links to pages where you can compare the prices of sample analgesics in online pharmacies and place an order with home delivery or collection at the pharmacy: A drug with metamizole, which in addition to analgesic effect has a diastolic effect, e.g. https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/65496/pyralgina-tabletki/apteki Drugs with paracetamol - with analgesic effect, e.g. https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/5684/apap-tabletki-powlekane/apteki https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/26254/efferalgan-tabletki-musujace/apteki Medications with ibuprofen - with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, e.g. https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/89706/ibum-express-kapsulki/apteki https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/37115/ibuprom-max-sprint-kapsulki/apteki I also include links to our articles that may be helpful: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/kategorie/bol-brzucha https://www.gdziepolek.pl/kategorie/wkladki-domaciczne

If abdominal pain is severe, you should urgently consult a doctor. Intrauterine devices are a convenient and effective contraceptive method. Their assumption, however, may be associated with some complications, the most dangerous of which is considered to be the perforation of the uterine muscle and the displacement of the IUD into the abdominal cavity. The doctor using an ultrasound examination is able to easily determine whether the location of the IUD is correct. So if the visit to the gynecologist took place after the onset of the symptoms described by you, probably the cause of the pain is not related to the displacement of the IUD. Within the first 2 weeks of insertion, inflammatory reactions may occur, usually resolving spontaneously. Probably for the treatment or prevention of a possible infection, he recommended the use of an antibiotic. If you do not notice any improvement in the coming days, you will need to repeat the tests. It is worth controlling body temperature. In the case of high fever or vomiting, an immediate visit to the doctor is necessary. In case of suspicion of displacement of the IUD, in addition to ultrasound, additional imaging tests of the abdominal cavity and reproductive organs are sometimes performed. An incorrectly positioned insert should be removed.
