Good morning. A 41 kg child received the antibiotic sumamed 500 for 5 days. Two hours later, he got diarrhea. I can't get through to the doctor. Isn't that too much? The leaflet says that the drug is intended for people over 45 kg.

In the case of a child weighing 41 kg, the appropriate dose should be about 410 mg per day, which is theoretically closer to 400 mg. If you have received 500 mg, this is slightly more than recommended, but it does not automatically represent a dangerous dose. However, diarrhea can be a side effect of an antibiotic, as these drugs can affect the intestinal flora.

If diarrhoea gets worse or other worrying symptoms appear, such as high fever, abdominal pain or signs of dehydration, you should seek medical help.

In the meantime, it is worth providing your child with enough water and electrolytes. It is also worth considering probiotics, which can help stabilize the intestinal bacterial flora during antibiotic therapy. A probiotic that will be a good choice:

The child has bronchitis.
