The summary of product characteristics of Salazopyrin only shows a decrease in sperm count and motility during treatment with the medicine in men, suggesting that it does not affect fertility in women.
However, a potential risk to the foetus has not been excluded when the drug is used in pregnant women.
The sulfasalazine in Salazopyrin crosses the placental barrier and may cause adverse reactions in the foetus.
In addition, sulfasalazine administered orally inhibits the absorption and metabolism of folic acid, which can cause its deficiencies.
According to the SPC: "There have been reports of neural tube malformations in infants whose mothers took sulfasalazine during pregnancy, but no direct relationship has been established between sulfasalazine exposure and the occurrence of these defects."
Salazopyrin should only be taken during pregnancy if absolutely necessary.
