There is no such relationship, bleeding or spotting can persist for several more days, just like a normal menstrual period. The body's reaction to the supply of hormones is an individual matter and the fact that bleeding continues does not mean that the patches do not work.
If you applied the first patch on the first day of your cycle (the first day of your period), you are protected from day one, despite the ongoing spotting or bleeding.
