Mpox is the new name for Monkeypox. This name was changed because it was misleading - now it is not monkeys, but rodents that are considered the main spreader of the disease. This was also related to concerns that the previous term could stigmatize some communities, evoking negative associations.
Mpox is "related" to the smallpox virus - the only human virus that has been completely eliminated. It is a zoonotic virus, which means that it was originally transmitted from animals to humans.
You can read more about Mpox and its new, more dangerous variant, which appeared in Europe for the first time, in our post: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/blog/nowy-wariant-wirusa-mpox-pojawil-sie-w-europie
