The excretion of dead pinworms after administration of Pyrantelum is a normal sign of effectiveness and does not mean that another dose should be given. In addition, taking the drug too often can exacerbate common side effects such as headaches, nausea or abdominal pain. It can also potentially lead to liver damage. Pyrantelum is metabolized in the liver, and too frequent intake can put a strain on this organ.
According to the standard of care, the treatment should be repeated after 2-4 weeks in order to eliminate parasites that may have developed from eggs not affected by the first dose of the drug. A negative stool test does not rule out pinworm infection and does not exempt from the need for repeated treatment.
