The Package Leaflet and the Summary of Product Characteristics for Reseligo do not describe the adverse reaction of water retention. However, weight gain that may have been associated with this has been commonly observed in patients.
The active substance of the drug, goserelin, is a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which, when administered over a long period of time, results in the inhibition of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion by the pituitary gland, leading to a decrease in serum testosterone levels in men and a decrease in serum estradiol levels in women. However, goserelin may transiently increase serum testosterone in men and serum estradiol in women at the beginning of treatment, which may contribute to increased water retention and oedema, resulting in weight gain. The observed symptoms - if they are related to the use of Reseligo - should therefore disappear over time.
