No, diazepam and lorazepam are not the same thing, although both drugs belong to the same group – benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and as sedatives or anticonvulsants.

Diazepam has a longer duration of action, which is why it is often used for long-term treatment of anxiety. Lorazepam is shorter-acting but starts to work faster, which makes it often used to treat acute anxiety.

Although both drugs have similar uses, they differ in duration of action, strength and metabolic profile, which affects the doctor's decision to choose the right agent for a particular clinical situation.
