In your case, anticoagulant treatment is very important, but at the same time it can cause side effects. Myeloproliferative neoplasms, such as the one with the JAK2 mutation, increase the risk of thrombotic complications. Given the history of cerebral thrombosis, anticoagulant treatment is crucial to prevent further incidents.
Coumadin (warfarin) is a traditional anticoagulant, but it can indeed cause many side effects and requires frequent monitoring. Eliquis (apixaban) belongs to a newer group of anticoagulants, the so-called direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), which are often better tolerated by patients. Unlike Coumadin, Eliquis does not require regular monitoring of INR levels, which can be an advantage.
However, the decision to change your anticoagulant medication must be made by your treating physician who knows your complete medical history and can assess all risk factors. Your doctor must assess whether Eliquis will be as effective as Coumadin in preventing blood clots in the context of your cancer. If you are taking medication for myeloproliferative neoplasm, your doctor must check that it will not interact with Eliquis.
Discuss this with your haematologist or thrombosis specialist. Only he can make a safe decision about a possible change of the drug, taking into account all aspects of your health condition and cancer. If you are unable to consult your doctor, you can use the teleconsultation here:
