According to current knowledge, the use of berberine during lactation is not recommended due to the lack of data on the degree of its excretion in breast milk. If berberine is excreted in milk in large quantities, there could potentially be a build-up of bilirubin in the newborn's/infant's brain, resulting in damage to the baby's brain, for example. Therefore, due to the possible toxicity, it is safest to avoid the use of berberine preparations during lactation. If there is a clear need for its use, you should consult your doctor who will assess the benefit-risk balance of berberine.
