Although metformin (the active ingredient in Metformax) is not a weight loss drug, it can have a beneficial effect on body weight, which is sometimes used as an off-label use. This drug, like any other, may or may not cause side effects. The most common are gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.
