The use of gentamicin eye drops is usually safe because the amount of the drug that enters the systemic circulation is minimal. However, eye drops containing gentamicin have the potential to be ototoxic – the risk is much lower than with systemic use of aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin, but it does exist. Ototoxicity is toxicity that affects the organ of hearing and balance, leading to hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or balance disorders.
