Irregular bleeding (prolonged, occurring in the middle of the cycle) is a common side effect of single-component contraceptive pills. Severe ailments occur especially at the beginning of the cycle. If the problem worsens, a consultation with a gynaecologist is recommended.
Information contained in the summary of product characteristics:
"The most commonly reported adverse reaction during clinical trials is irregular bleeding. Irregular bleeding has been observed in almost 50% of patients taking desogestrel (Ovulan). Because desogestrel, unlike other progestogen-only tablets, causes ovulation suppression close to 100%, irregular bleeding is more common than with other progestogen-only tablets. In 20 to 30% of women, bleeding may occur more frequently, while in others 20% of bleeding may occur less frequently or not at all. Bleeding from the genital tract can also last longer. After a few months of use, bleeding occurs less frequently."
