Should an increased body temperature during menstruation be a cause for concern?
33.99 zł

Low-grade fever and menstruation

A few days before my period, I have an elevated temperature, it persists after the bleeding occurs and a few days after. It's been like this for many months, but recently I was even 37.8.

When I have this low-grade fever I feel weakness, back pain sometimes, general shattering and I feel like I'm "sick".

Is this normal or does it require consultation with a gynecologist?

Keep in mind that body temperature varies from woman to woman. However, the temperature always stays lower before ovulation, rises during ovulation, and then stays high for the next 10-16 days, only to fall again at the start of the next period.

Progesterone is responsible for this temperature swing. This hormone is secreted mainly in the second half of the cycle, also a few days before the period. For this reason, your body temperature before menstruation may be slightly higher than during menstrual bleeding.

I would like to emphasize that just like the abundance and duration of menstrual bleeding, the increase in body temperature in each woman is a very individual feature. Some women won't notice this change at all because it's going to be so subtle. For others, it will force them to reach for a thermometer.

Of course, if you are concerned about this, you can always seek advice from a gynecologist. If you are unable to contact your doctor, you can use the teleconsultation here:

Keep in mind that during your period you may feel weak, tired, mood swings; Back pain in the lumbar region is typical. The myometrium contracts, which means that we may also experience minor discomfort in the form of abdominal pain and breast tenderness.

A weakened body is more susceptible to infections, especially during cold season. It may have happened that as a consequence of a weakened immune system, you had a mild infection, which resulted in a temperature of almost 38 degrees C.

Observe your body, record your temperature readings. If they are repetitive from month to month and, in addition, the symptoms you mentioned disappear after a period of bleeding, I would not worry about them.

If the increased temperature is accompanied by cough, runny nose or muscle pain, you should see a doctor.
