If you started using the contraceptive pill on the first day of your cycle (i.e. on day 1 of your period), you are protected from the start. In case of delay - for the first week you should use additional protection during intercourse (e.g. a condom). Birth control pills should be started by the 5th day of menstruation. For the first 3-4 months of using hormonal contraception, you may experience cycle disorders such as prolonged bleeding or spotting. This is a common side effect that usually goes away on its own.
