Drovelis is a combined contraceptive containing estetrol and drospirenone.
Drospirenone has progestogenic, antigonadotropic (inhibits the secretion of the LH hormone), antiandrogenic and weak antimineralocorticoid properties.
Estetrol, on the other hand, has antigonadotropic properties, lowering the hormones FSH and LH in serum. Estetrol also occurs naturally in the female body and is a hormone produced by the fetal liver during pregnancy. It has been observed that synthetic estetrol acts as a weak estrogen in the liver or breast, and in e.g. the uterus, vagina or bones it shows its full estrogenic potential. The preparation will affect the local concentration of estrogens in the tissues.
