What are the risks of giving a vitamin B injection intravenously instead of intramuscularly?
19.99 zł

Good morning. What are the consequences of administering vitamin B intravenously instead of into the muscle (intramuscular injection), e.g. in the case of abnormal aspiration? In the SmPC there is only that it is not allowed to administer intravenously.

Thank you in advance for your reply

Rapid injection (intravenous administration) increases the risk of a severe systemic reaction Dizziness, vomiting, bradycardia, arrhythmias,
lightheadedness and muscle cramps. According to the manufacturer: "Any accidental intravenous injection must be monitored by a physician or in a hospital setting depending on the severity of the resulting symptoms."

In addition to the B vitamins themselves, these injections also contain lidocaine - a substance with a local anesthetic effect. Intramuscular administration means that the injection site is anesthetized and the patient does not feel severe pain; In the case of intravenous administration - there will be no effect of local anesthesia.

If you notice any side effects, you should report them to your doctor, who will decide what to do next. You can find out why you should report adverse drug reactions here:
