The first-line drug is methotrext, methylprednisolone may be suitable as an adjunctive, short-term measure.
Methotrexate is an effective DMARD, and recent studies have shown higher efficacy at high doses (20-30 mg per week) than at low doses (7.5-15 mg per week). Methotrexate is recommended as a first-line treatment for patients with active arthritis and the "gold standard" for RA therapy. It can be used alone or in combination with other medicines. In patients with early RA who have not received any DMARDs in the past, the effectiveness of methotrexate is no less than that of other classic DMARDs or biologics.
