The information in the summary of product characteristics indicates that both options are acceptable:
'NuvaRing should be inserted at the latest on the day following a break in the use of the pill or transdermal patch, a previously used combined hormonal contraceptive, or after a period of use of placebo tablets.
If you have used your previous method of contraception regularly and correctly, and if you are certain that you are not pregnant, you can switch from your current combined hormonal contraception to the NuvaRing vaginal therapeutic system on any day of your cycle. A break in the use of the current contraceptive should never exceed the recommended time."
