Due to shift work and a stressful lifestyle, I took melatonin for sleep for several years. Unfortunately, it hardly works for me at all these days. Is this tolerance likely to go back? If so, how long can I not take it?

There is a risk of developing a tolerance to the dose of melatonin taken. If the drug has been well tolerated and you are seeing weaker effects due to long-term use, you may want to consider increasing your dose.
It would be best to consult a doctor anyway, especially if you are taking any other medications, e.g. for high blood pressure.
