The leaflet of efracea refers to 'permanent discolouration of the teeth'. My teeth are naturally very white and I'm worried about this effect. How common is it and can it be avoided in general? Thank you for contributing

According to the Summary of Product Characteristics of Efracea, administration of tetracyclines during dental development may result in permanent discolouration of the teeth (yellow-grey-brown) in humans. This reaction is more typical after long-term use of the drug, but has also been observed with repeated short-term treatments. Enamel underdevelopment was also found. As with other tetracyclines, doxycycline forms a stable complex with calcium in all bone-forming tissues. A decrease in fibula growth rate was observed in preterm infants receiving oral tetracycline at doses of 25 mg/kg every 6 hours. This reaction has been shown to resolve when the drug is discontinued.
To sum up, the problem of tooth discoloration concerns only children - the developmental phase of dentition.
