Smoking e-cigarettes alone will not adversely affect the effectiveness of contraception.
However, it may increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects. Smoking cigarettes, and more specifically the nicotine they contain, increases the level of fibrinogen in the blood, which in turn increases platelet aggregation, causing it to thicken. This predisposes to the formation of blood clots in the veins when taking birth control pills.
You should be aware that blood clots or blockages can lead to heart attacks and strokes. It is worth knowing that smoking cigarettes also promotes thromboembolic complications, which is why smoking and hormonal contraception are not a good combination.
In such a situation, I recommend consulting a doctor. Your gynaecologist may offer you single-ingredient tablets that contain progestin alone and are associated with a much lower risk in this area.
