It is unlikely that you have been infected with HIV.
HIV infection can occur through contact with blood and certain biological materials (e.g. semen, vaginal secretions, human tissues) through mucous membranes and through injured skin.
It is believed that approximately 0.1 ml of infected blood is necessary for HIV infection. This is the amount that can be seen with the naked eye.
HIV infection can occur in the following situations:
- intravenous injection,
- transfusions of infected blood, blood products and organ transplants,
- occupational exposures (e.g. needle or scalpel injuries) in health care facilities,
- maternal-foetal infection from an HIV-infected mother (childbirth, breastfeeding),
- sexual contact,
- lending objects contaminated with contaminated blood, e.g. needles, by drug addicts,
- medical procedures performed in a non-sterile manner.
