I am taking an antibiotic for breast inflammation and want to stop lactation with Diostinex. I don't know what to do with the milk that will be in my breasts?

Hello. I am 18 days postpartum for 2 days I take antibiotics because I have breast inflammation and crp 20. I want to end lactation with Diostinex, but I do not know what to do with the milk that will be in the breast? I would add that I have hyperlactation and I use a breast pump to pull milk

You did not specify what antibiotic you take, so it is difficult for me to answer the question unequivocally, only on the basis of such a short description.

Many antibiotics are safe during lactation, they are properly tested, which is why they are listed as compounds compatible with breastfeeding (category L1 according to Dr. Hale's classification). These are, m.in, penicillins (e.g. Ospen, Amotaks, Augmentin) and beta-lactam antibiotics, i.e. cephalosporins (e.g. Duracef, Ceclor, Zinnat).

If your doctor has not advised you to stop breastfeeding while taking antibiotics, take the dose as soon as your baby is fed (never before feeding!).

However, while taking Dostinex, do not breastfeed or give your baby expressed milk.

Here are some tips if you want to end lactation:

1. Gradual weaning: The end of lactation should be gradual to avoid unpleasant ailments such as milk stagnation or breast inflammation. It is advisable to gradually reduce the number of breastfeedings, starting with the less important ones. Many mothers start, for example, by reducing night feedings.

2. Expressing: You should still express to relieve tension in your breasts and prevent clogged milk ducts. It is advisable to gradually reduce the frequency of pumping until the complete end of lactation.

3. Health monitoring: Please continue to monitor your health, especially if you have known breast inflammation. If you notice any worrying symptoms such as fever, worsening of your breasts or pain, please contact your doctor.

4. Milk storage: If you want to save milk for future use, please consult your doctor to find out if it is possible and safe in your current situation.
